Summary: This article provides a theoretical discussion of a possible link between suicide and paranoia. Even though suicide is associated with different types of psychopathologies in the literature – specifically with narcissism in psychoanalytic works – the possibility of a link between paranoia and suicide is hardly mentioned. Nevertheless, a closer investigation of the Lacanian theory together with different case examples may provide an alternative perspective about this connection. Congruently, my aim is to describe how the narcissistic suicidal aggression may shelter a paranoid overtone which blossoms into suicide notes and into the functions of this act itself, by providing a closer look at the dynamics of the mirror stage and the connection between foreclosure and literary productions. Moreover, I shared some of the findings from my PhD thesis on suicide notes to highlight the link between paranoia and suicide.

Samenvatting: In deze tekst gaat de auteur in op het vraagstuk en het enigma van de suïcide en, daaraan gekoppeld, de onmogelijkheid, het niet weten, het tekort en het teveel dat deze aan de orde stelt. Langsheen een wat meanderende theoretische, filosofische en klinische verdieping komt daarbij meer specifiek, vanuit het eigen werkveld, de kliniek van de psychose in het vizier. In een eerste deel, ‘Suïcide als act’, gaat hij in op wat vanuit de psychoanalyse meestal met suïcide in verband wordt gebracht: de passage à l’acte, de problematiek van het object, de melancholie. In een tweede deel, ‘Suïcidaliteiten in de hedendaagse kliniek’, graaft de auteur de grond af van een aantal hedendaagse derivaten van de psychiatrie rond suïcide: het begrip ‘suïcidaliteit’, de zogeheten ‘chronische’ suïcidaliteit en het ideaal van de ‘suïcidepreventie’. Naast de kwestie wat deze afgeleide modaliteiten proberen zeggen en klinisch overspannen, wordt ook enige aandacht besteed aan de vraag wat de hulpverlener aan moet met hoe deze ‘kliniek van de suïcide’, onvermijdelijk, affecteert.

Psychosomatic phenomena can certainly be considered as equivalent to the “passage à l’acte” in the real of the body of the Other. On the basis of a case-study, the relationship is questionned between the death-wishes of the mother concerning the subject, and his incapacity for symbolising and articulating his anxiety and suffering. Subjects, who do not manage to subjectify their unbearable truth, often “opt for” the “passages à l’acte” and/or psychosomatic phenomena.

The death-drive runs as a red thread through a reading of Lacan. Starting from a clinic of suicide, Lacan proposes a theory whih is based on a split that is present at every level of the human structure: the real (biological), the imaginary (narcissistic), the symbolic (linguistic), up to and including the fantasma (primordial masochism). We attempt to draw a lesson from this concerning the cure and the problematic field of mental health.
