Creating Space for the Encounter: Meeting the Impossible
Summary: The movement called Institutional Psychotherapy is grounded in the ongoing effort to install the necessary conditions of possibility for the liberation of the clinic from alienation. To care for psychotic and other suffering people, we need to create a supportive transferential field in which the human encounter is essential. This touches the Real and makes possible, in a moment of crisis, a transformation of the position of the Subject. The Collective, the pathic sculpting of the space-between-people, allows for the emergence of the singular, the unexpected, the impossible. The starting point of this article is the author's experience in the psychiatric clinic of La Borde (France). Through a number of concrete examples and critical moments, it hopes to show the interweaving of the elaboration of conceptual tools and the therapeutic situation within an institution.

Résumé: La psychothérapie institutionnelle, et spécialement Jean Oury, a développé un concept clé pour décrire ce dont il s'agit dans le quotidien de la clinique: le collectif. Le collectif fait écho à une nécessité praxique: accueillir l'autre. Pour cela, nulle recette, ni pour le faire, ni pour le comprendre. L'expérience de l'atelier équitation participe de cette quête qui nous occupe: Qu'en est-il du collectif? Qu'en est-il du vécu du corps dans la psychose? Qu'en est-il de notre méthode pour aborder avec un regard pragmatiste (soucieux des effets plus que des principes) le collectif à La Borde? À cheval peut-être verrons-nous les choses autrement.

"Petite Balade dans les Entours": Some Free Associations on Everyday Life
Summary: The reader is invited to take a "partial" walk through the practical and theoretical landscape of everyday life. In a meaningful psychiatry, everyday life is the basic and necessary red thread in order to admit and meet psychotic and other patients who suffer. This requires a subtle kind of work and a permanent institutional analysis with both creative and political accents in which details play an important role. The author worked for a couple of years in La Borde and is now engaged in the creation of a "toolkit" of concepts of Institutional Psychotherapy in a psychiatric setting in Paris.

L'institution aux prises avec le corps: déchirures du corps du psychotique, déchirure du corps soignant

Résumé: Cet article présente un aspect du travail quotidien au sein d'une institution résidentielle de type communautaire avec des adultes souffrant de psychose. Le travail en question est celui effectué depuis plusieurs années à propos de la prise en charge du corps des patients d'un point de vue résolument non médical mais plutôt dans ce qu'il est le support du contact et de l'échange social. Cette prise en charge du corps cadrée par un atelier "Soins du corps" n'a pas été sans poser de questions au corps soignant tant toucher des corps risque de brûler les doigts sur un versant érotique qui ne peut être canalisé et, dès lors, détourné, que par une présence empreinte de tendresse qu'il n'est pas simple pour les soignants de mettre en route et d'accepter. Cela dit, cette expérience nous montre quotidiennement, dans ses effets positifs et inattendus pour nos patients, le bien-fondé d'une réflexion et d'une prise en charge assumée du corps du patient en tant que partie prenante et engageante du lien social et de l'inscription du sujet dans la culture et la rencontre.

Résumé: L'article essaie de toucher certains éléments présents dans le paysage institu¬tionnel du travail à la Clinique de La Borde. À partir d'une rencontre clinique et inspirés par certains concepts de Félix Guattari et Gilles Deleuze tel que l'inconscient machinique, le devenir, les agencements, nous avons esquissé quelques parallèles avec le champ insti¬tutionnel, l'existence psychotique et notre travail (donc notre subjectivité) affectés par ces deux rencontres quotidiennes: l'institutionnel et la psychose. Nous avons introduit l'importance de la notion de paradigme éthique, esthétique, politique comme boussole pour un travail qui cherche à faire émerger dans l'institutionnel des lignes de force et des lignes de fuite du désir qui favorisent la santé et qui affirment la vie. Daily Work in a Home with Non-Working People: A Continuous Search Process
Summary: The ideology of vzw Albe (a non profit organisation) is based on institutional psychotherapy (IP). A brief history of the institution explains why IP was chosen as a model. The authors link concrete everyday experiences with some basic principles. First of all they explain the principle of free circulation, giving an example of how different spaces can be created to enable freedom of movement. Another important principle is heterogeneity, meaning diversity in location, pathology, personnel and activities. The next issue treated in the paper is how to be present in everyday life. Finally the writers give an insight in an actual workshop to demonstrate how all these attitudes, as described above, are combined in an IP workshop. Throughout the discussion it becomes apparent that linking IP theory with its practical application is an ongoing process. The principles of IP and the ideas behind it are often considered to be complicated, however observing an IP workshop reveals a poetic simplicity.

Moving House: On the "Toing and Froing" between Crisis Intervention and a Treatment Unit
Summary: This essay tracks the experiences of an excited psychotic woman who moves from a closed crisis unit to an open treatment unit. Initially the move has devastating consequences and she falls apart. After only a couple of days she is transferred back to the closed unit in a hypo-manic, completely excited, state. This is the beginning of a process involving both units. We decide to move her gradually: a couple of hours a day in the closed unit and a couple of hours a day in the open one. At first the only idea we have is to organise regular meetings between the teams. Very soon the idea develops to work more with her transference onto objects and places rather than with her transference onto members of the team. Work with a photo album quickly reduces her excitation. In a second stage we try to explain what went wrong with her first transfer and what worked with the second attempt. To this end we use the conceptual apparatus of Institutional Psychotherapy, the notion of contact (Szondi/Schotte), and Winnicott's ideas with regard to the transitional object and the continuity of being.

Encounter with Institutional Psychotherapy
Summary: The pathic, which is fundamental to all practice, releases this practice from a thematic, goal-directed and measurable realisation. It turns practice into a process that is continuously transforming itself in a wide variety of initiatives which are supported by a pathic continuum, like reception, taking time and polyphonic-tinged encounters. In this way Institutional Psychotherapy tries to take shape within a care system that is, in and of itself, closed.

Résumé: Le terme "analyse structurale" a été proposé surtout par Juan López Ibor, en particulier en 1957 (2ème congrès international de psychiatrie: schizophrénie, à Zurich) s'articulant autour de cette proposition des regroupements de concepts analytiques et phénoménologiques, en particulier autour de François Tosquelles, Jacques Lacan, Gisela Pankow, Rümke, Bleuler, etc. Quelques exemples cliniques dans une structure institution¬nelle, permettant d'articuler "transfert dissocié" (Jean Oury), polyphonie et multiréféren¬ciabilité (François Tosquelles) ainsi que les notions de narcissisme originaire, de rythme (Ludwig Klages), contribuant à proposer une ébauche de métapsychologie propre à la prise en charge institutionnelle des schizophrènes.

Résumé: Cet article est la retranscription de l'interview avec le psychiatre Jean-Claude Polack. Dans la première partie de l'interview, l'interviewé retrace les évènements politi¬ques majeurs qui traversent l'histoire de la psychothérapie institutionnelle: la guerre d'Espagne, la Résistance, l'extermination douce, la guerre d'Algérie, le Parti Communiste, mai '68, le droit à l'avortement, etc. Il situe également les relations conflictuelles et tendues entre la psychothérapie institutionnelle, la schizo-analyse et l'antipsychiatrie, qu'il a vécu au premier rang lors de ses 12 années de travail à la clinique de la Borde, où il était un proche de Félix Guattari.

Résumé: À partir d'un cours de Roland Barthes qui avait pour titre "Comment-vivre-ensemble", il s'agit de repenser le désir de communauté aujourd'hui, tenant en compte le besoin de solitude, les distances variables, les désertions nécessaires face à un croissant despotisme de la sociabilité. Au fond, il faudrait articuler autrement les rapports entre le commun et le singulier, soit dans des contextes institutionnels, soit d'une façon plus générale, comme l'indiquent, chacun à sa manière, Jean Oury, Maurice Blanchot, Gilles Deleuze et Giorgio Agamben.
